Re: best dead show ever
All excellent picks listed already, HOWEVER....
while opinions will vary, PLEASE do not deny yourself the pleasures of what I believe is simply the greatest Dead show of all time:
The show reveals the band playing with power, precision, passion, and near perfection. They songs are perfromed at a relaxed pace (check out Phil's picture-perfect loping bass notes that drop into the opening of BERTHA; the gorgeous notes Jerry plays with in the opening of EYES before he takes off into the stratosphere)...
there are few lyrical flubs (I can't think of any off the top) and Jerry simply belts out vocally on tunes like MIGHT AS WELL and BLACK PETER...
The JACK STRAW has the greatest build up to the "witchita" verse i've ever heard...there are longer versions of teh tune but none better, IMO.
The 2nd set is monster of jamming that includes a bluesy AND rocked-out STEPHEN, a killer NFA, a ridiculously mad-cap SUGAR MAGNOLIA that features an impromptu drumming frenzy by Mickey and Billy before SSDD.
Nothing in this show, played at an intimate college fieldhouse in Northern Illinois disappoints. It swings, sings, rocks, inspires...lifts the soul.
There's a great RAMBLE ON ROSE as well, so "do yourself a favor" and check out 10/29/77. Play it loud and play it proud!
